Design with Hannah: Popular Interior Design Styles Explained | Which One is Right for You?

I Can’t Tell You How Many Times I’ve Heard This: “I Want My House to Look Beautiful and Feel Like Me… But I Don’t Know My Style.”

Well, guess what, friends? I’m here today to solve that mystery once and for all. Because honestly, not knowing your style isn’t a dead end — it’s the start of a really fun design journey. And whether you’re redecorating your whole house or just trying to nail that one tricky room, understanding your style is the key to making your space feel truly you.

So let’s break down some of the most popular interior design styles out there — and I’ll share little tips on how to nail the look with colors, textures, and styling tricks that bring each vibe to life.

The Refined Farmhouse — A Classic, But Make It Modern

Farmhouse style has been a crowd favorite for years, but lately it’s been going through a major glow-up. Think cozy yet clean, rustic warmth with a polished finish — this is what designers are calling Modern Farmhouse or Refined Farmhouse.

If you love white shiplap walls, vintage-inspired lantern lighting, and natural wood accents but want something less “country cottage” and more elevated, this is your jam. Soft neutrals like creamy whites, warm beiges, and gentle grays are your color palette here. Layer in textures like linen curtains, chunky knit throws, and worn leather for that lived-in but luxe feel.

Styling tip: Mix antique heirlooms or distressed wood furniture with sleek, modern metals like matte black or brushed nickel to keep the look fresh, not fussy.

The Light, Breezy, and Relaxed Coastal Style

Now, if the farmhouse vibe doesn’t quite speak to you, maybe the fresh and airy Coastal style will. This look is all about bringing the beach inside — think sunlit rooms, soft blues, crisp whites, and natural textures like rattan, wicker, and linen.

Coastal design is casual but chic, evoking that endless vacation feeling where you want to kick off your shoes and breathe easy. Driftwood accents, sea glass, and nautical stripes add subtle, soothing details.

Styling tip: Layer in sheer curtains and plenty of plants to amplify the light, breezy vibe. Don’t be shy with woven textures and light wood furniture that looks like it’s been kissed by the sun.

The Perfect Balance: Transitional Style

If you’re someone who can’t quite pick between classic charm and modern simplicity, Transitional might be your sweet spot. This style blends traditional furniture shapes with contemporary colors and clean

lines — it’s like the best of both worlds.

Neutral palettes with occasional bold accents create a timeless and sophisticated look that works for many homes. Think plush sofas with straight edges, elegant light fixtures, and textured rugs.

Styling tip: Use classic pieces like tufted chairs or crown molding, but keep accessories simple and streamlined to avoid feeling too heavy.

My Personal Favorite: Modern Organic Design — Warm, Natural, and Inviting

Now, for my personal fave — Modern Organic Design. If you’re all about natural materials and crave a calming space that feels connected to the outdoors, this style might just be your perfect match. It combines sleek, modern lines with warm wood tones, natural fibers, and plenty of greenery to bring the outside in.

Think soft earth tones like beige, gentle greens, and natural stone shades paired with simple, functional furniture. Imagine woven chairs, linen textiles, and layered soft textures — all working together to create a soothing, grounded atmosphere that feels fresh and inviting.

Styling tip: Layer natural textures like jute rugs, woven baskets, and stoneware pottery. Add plants generously and let natural light do its thing.

Last But Not Least: The Timeless Cool of Mid-Century Modern

Finally, if you’re into sleek retro vibes with a splash of boldness, Mid-Century Modern might be your style. This design is all about clean lines, organic shapes, and rich woods like teak and walnut. Bold colors like mustard yellow, olive green, and burnt orange often pop against neutrals, giving a dynamic yet balanced look.

Styling tip: Combine iconic furniture pieces with statement lighting and abstract art. Keep clutter minimal to really let those shapes and colors shine.

So, What’s Your Style?

If you’re still unsure, that’s okay! Most people are a mix of two or more styles — and that’s what makes your home truly yours. Start small: experiment in one room, pull together a mood board (I’ll teach you how in my upcoming course!), and have fun with colors and textures until it clicks.

Your home should be a reflection of your personality — comfortable, welcoming, and 100% authentic.

Feeling stuck or want help discovering your style and making it happen? You know where to find me — I’m just a call away from helping you turn your house into the home that feels like you.

’Til next time,
